What is this site about?
This site is about a dog named Bailey who was diagnosed with lymphoma, a fatal disease to both humans and pets, and how through luck (timing of events), and a lot of time, energy, as well as money, was spent by her owners with the goal of saving her life. Hopefully, our actions will give other pets the opportunity to beat a fatal disease, and with the treatment she is currently undergoing--the tumor vaccine lymphocyte infusion from Clifford could transfer into saving humans in the future. At the moment this procedure cannot be performed on people because there is not FDA approval for it.This is a lot of effort just for one animal--can't you get a new dog?
People have said to me all that time and money for just a dog? Though I have always loved pets--really more of a cat person than a dog person--I have never owned a dog before that was preplanned and chosen. My husband has had dogs in the year's past, but this is the first dog that has been truly mine. I never understood the connection dog owners had with their dogs until we got Bailey. I have four grown children--Bailey is close up there in importance to me as they are in the value, and in the love I feel for her. She is irreplaceable! The past few years have been particularly challenging for my family as I have a son with schizoaffective disorder (mental illness), and my husband was recently diagnosed with incurable prostrate cancer. Bailey is the one bright spot in our lives. When she looks up at me with her pleading eyes she knows that I am doing everything within my power to save her. Like Dr. Sullivan when he was given the challenge of saving Comet, he would not take no for an answer, nor will I. I have had three classes of elementary school children (I am an elementary school teacher in Seattle) who have been with me in my ups and downs with Bailey's story. Whatever happens with Bailey at least I will know that I gave it my all, which I hope transfers to the children I teach. Can this research benefit humans?
Because of cancer research performed on dogs to give humans the best treatments for a cancer cure, like Dr. Sullivan, I feel that now it is time for pets to benefit from the same lifesaving treatments. Why are you asking for donations?
We have spent well over $25,000.00 in our quest to save Bailey. This money has been spent on the private detective's fee, her chemotherapy treatments, blood tests, the matching testing of the other dogs, medications, costs for Clifford's owners such as gas money and hotel bill, her room and board while she was in isolation, the irradiation at WASU, and the transplant itself. Cost of another transplant would be approximately $18,000.00. We are very excited to be involved in pioneering life saving treatments for pets, that could very well transfer to humans! What will the money be used for?
The money would be going towards Bailey's medical costs--anything above would go to Dr. Sullivan for his dream of setting up a transplant center in W. Washington for pets. He really needs a linear accelerator for performing the total body irradiation and a building to house this piece of equipment. Cost for this would be well over $500,000.Finally, as more transplants are performed on pets the cost will go down dramatically, and if a World Book Registry can be started for pets, like they have for people, it would be much easier to find a donor match. Many owners have no information regarding of their dog's family background, and in my case even though I did, it still took me over a year to track them down and find a donor match for Bailey!
Are the donations tax deductible?
Currently, we are not set up as a tax deductible organization. At this time, the donations aren't tax deductible.I'd like to do a story featuring Bailey, who should I contact?
